March

We have been studying Edgar Allen Poe's work focusing on themes that relate to his life. We have studied four short stories and the poem 'The Raven.' The Scavenger Hunt allows students to understand Poe's life as well as reviews about his work. The student's have enjoyed the tie-in with the author's life and his work.

Edgar Allen Poe Scavenger Hunt.docx

Dear Eve, I like how you used the scavenger hunt to generate analytical thinking rather than just fill-in-the-blank. Now I wish I'd done a scavenger hunt instead of the WebQuest, even though it worked out well for the long-term projects the seniors have to do. The way you designed it, the scavenger hunt would work so well for almost every author I assign. I'd use it throughout the year, and now I wish I'd taken this opportunity to get to know how it's done. Inspiring! Elisabeth Rose

Response to Eve K: I really enjoyed the Poe Scavenger Hunt.  He is an author that I just love.  Your students gained a great deal of value to learn about him in this manner.  The critical thinking element was evident throughout this worksheet.  Janet Harris

Curriculum Page for students-This page below is intended for an inrtoductory activity to our Life Science Unit. Students have already planted seeds and we are wsiting for them to grow. This web page has a quick exam of assessment purposes that is very kid frindely. If students can idientify the main parts of a plant and thier function it should give a great start to our Life Science Unit becasue plants are the foundation of life and the bottom of the food chain.

I changed my Powerpoint to a different version. If anyone tried to open it before and couldn't, you should be able to now. Sorry!! We study the water cycle each year so I thought (hoped) this would be a great way to make it more interesting for my kids. I paired them up with a laptop to share so they could do it together. They each had a sheet to fill out with all the questions. The students loved it and it was amazing to watch. They were so engaged in the project. After they had finished the hunt, we did it together on the SmartBoard to check and review our answers. I'm not sure who enjoyed it the most:-)

Description of the Web Quest on QuestGarden:

"Your task has three stages. First, you must achieve your highest possible understanding of Paper 2 and the novels in our genre study: Ceremony, Heart of Darkness, Like Water for Chocolate, and, if you are a Higher Level candidate, The Scarlet Letter. Second, with yourself as your intended audience, you must identify, organize, and present the most significant material concerning each work that you will need as you study for Paper 2. Such material may include but is not limited to: setting, theme, characters, role of the narrator, structure, zeitgeist, significant quotes, and dichotomies. The third stage, is, of course, to sit for your IB Paper 2 exam in May."

The WebQuest:

http://questgarden.com/62/45/3/080316150029

Future WebQuest Applications:

As I work on this WebQuest, I'm seeing an application that may help all students in the program. They have to write an "extended essay," something like an independent thesis. They have an advisor, but no course devoted to it. I've been planning going a series of writing workshops for them, and now I plan to create a WebQuest as well. I spoke to our director about it today and have her full support. It's wonderful to be able to offer the students these tools. The librarians adore me now, and I finally feel as if I'm catching up on technology. Thank you Ron and Jackie!

Hi Rose, WOW! What a great job. Your Web Quest looked so professional. I liked how you included the evaluation rubric for the students. Great Job. Susan Kypriotakis

My Digital Story is about our trip to Georgia two years ago. When my boys were very small, I took boxes of pictures of them, but as life has gotten more hectic, I generally don't remember my camera and what few recent pictures I have are in my cell phone. That's embarrassing. I actually chose the Georgia trip because I had a decent amount of photos that I could use! But it was a fun trip, too! I can see how doing these digital stories will motivate me to take more pictures everywhere...I may even remember to bring my camera!

Amnesty International has a curriculum unit http://www.amnestyusa.org/education/pdf/kiterunnerhigh.pdf  to use in conjunction with teaching the novel, The Kite Runner.  The unit gives lots of information on the history and politics and culture of Afghansitan, including specific information about the Taliban.  The unit and the novel are obviously very timely and often in the news.  I created this webquest using one of the introductory lessons on the country in general.  It introduces the students to the different sects and their 'place' in the culture, which gives them some basis for understanding the relationships and behavior of the characters in the novel.  This lesson and unit are for high school students, and I teach the unit in 10th grade English classes.

I found this great website on the branches of government with lots of grade appropriate material (4th). So I put together this scavenger hunt to force students to pull out most of the pertinent information from the website. They loved working on it, and they learned a lot and now they have been asking me to make another one!

While working on our Ecosystems unit this currulum page was designed for students to navigate through a web page and find information about an ecosystem. After submerging themselves in reading book during reading on ecosystems, they were to select an ecosystem during science,  to study and eventually find an animal that is found there and create a concept map.

Response to Nichelle Simmons: What a great idea and interactive why to have students get involved with learning the different types of animals and learning about their habitats.

Your story was very nice. I enjoyed seeing that cute little smiling face on Imani. I was a beautiful peak into her first year of life. Janet

Response to Eve K: I really enjoyed the Poe Scavenger Hunt.  He is an author that I just love.  Your students gained a great deal of value to learn about him in this manner.  The critical thinking element was evident throughout this worksheet.  Janet Harris

Janet, I like your idea for 'Finding Poets' and could see many different ways to use this within our poetry unit.  ~Kathy Curry

Becky.

What an inspirational story and journey you were able to participate in. I have often wanted to participate in such a mission, providing dentistry for these underprivileged people. Thanks for your efforts.

Becky, As a fellow math teacher, I appreciate your ability to make a difficult subject easy to grasp and apply. By the way, I saw the calculus in motion site and am ordering a subscription at this point. Thanks

Description of the curriculum page created for March:

This month I decided to create a scavenger hunt for my 7th and 8th grade Honors Algebra students to help them with a difficult concept we are working on involving the factoring of polynomials. I feel if they can utilize other sources other that the textbook, especially any associated with the computer, they will want to do the investigation and it will reinforce what we are attempting to do in the classroom. I created the page using Filamentality and was suprised at the ease in using their site. The students were asked to log onto the link, answer the questions using the supplied links, print out their final document, and submit it to me as a three grade test assignment. The process worked beautifully.

Becky, As usual, such an incredible job of creating a tool to make such a difficult subject accessible to your students. My son is in AP Statistics and would benefit so much from such a resource.

Dee Arose:Susan Kyprioakis, Your octopus story and science experiement was wonderful and so complete. You gave me the idea to use a science experiment that I was going to do with my students on germination using scientific method for my February assignment. Dee Arose
Dee Arose:Laura Lynch I loved your story on fourth grade writing. Fourth grade writing is near and dear to me. I missed teaching fourth grade this year but I enjoyed moving up with my wonderful class and having them another year. Dee Arose
Dee Arose:Christina Ledbetter I loved your story on Cypress Woods. My fourth grade class was scheduled to go their last year on two different dates and both times they canceled on us the morning of our scheduled date.
