My "Writing Partners" movie is used to teach this process to my students. I am having my students star in little movies that reinforce processes used in our writing program and hopefully next year I will expand to other areas.
Colleen -- As part of my work with the Tampa Bay Area Writing Project, I spend 5 weeks in the summer working with k-12 teachers. I am constantly amazed at the writing that goes on in the early elementary grades. Thank you for nurturing a love of writing in our students. I'm trying to keep that same passion alive in seventh grade. Holly
Colleen - I love that you also used your kids. We did a video for choosing a just right book using our students. I'd like to show them your video. It's short and could be used frequently to reinforce "writing buddies". Great idea! Cheryl
Colleen, that is a really neat idea! I'm going to use more digital story telling to enhance out basic skills next year for sure. Kids also get engaged when they see themselves! Very nice.

Gerald, Nice job on the video, I bet you are having fun with the new camera. Good luck on your wedding plans, March 29 is the same day I got married, although it was 39 years ago, boy do I feel old. You did a great job on the narration, speaking slowly and clearly. It is difficult to slow down so that everyone can understand what you are saying.

Gerald,
I'm glad I had the chance to view your personal Photo Story project. I really enjoyed this personal storytelling because your personality came out through your narration...fun loving, loving, respectful, etc. Your narration was captivating because your vocal tones and inflections were very engaging to the viewer.

Happy New Year Everyone! May your 2008 be great!
I am reposting my integration plans for November & December due to the nature of our assignments this January & February. I have already started using the PhotoStory 3 software for various projects with my students with autism. These students are very visual and perform well using programs such as these to tell their stories. We will be finishing the projects in January. I will use these January and February assignments to further develop my understanding of digital story telling skills. jmk 1/3/08
Jay - I remember you sending out a photostory to our school with your students. You are already integrating this technology into your classroom. I can tell your students really love the new things you are doing with them!! Go Vikings! Lolly
My Comments to Lolly:
Lolly,
Thank you for your comments. Yes, I and my students are having a great learning experience with the new technology we have incorporated into our curriculum. Has made a great impact. Jay,
You sent out a powerful message for all teachers. As a writing teacher, I was especially drawn to your comment in your production notes: "My voice and give them a voice." Last week, a former student of mine who has autism came by to visit. He's a junior in high school now (I had him as a 7th grader), driving, and looking at St. Petersburg College. After he left, I thought about all that he had taught me that year. I think I'm a better teacher (and person) for having Will in my class. Holly
Jay- Just fabulous! What else can I say? Jess
FEBRUARY PROJECT: jmk 2/24/2008
In February, I continued to explore both the PhotoStory 3 and Power Point Software by continuing to incorporate them into my classroom curriculum in the areas of Self Discovery and Career Exploration / Job Skills. These visual presentations really enhance the learning for my autistic students; they enjoyed working with fellow students to create their stories or by discovering the skills for interviewing a job. Each project was indicative of each of the individual student. Here are examples of their projects.

Lolly,
The PhotoStory on "Viking Bucks" was great. I loved the way the "student with the bucks" became the thread that tied the story together. This software is going to be a great tool for teachers and students to highlight some of the great things that each class is doing. As you know, we work on the same campus, but have few opportunities to collaborate or to become familiar with the things we are doing in our classrooms. Now, I get to participate in those activities by viewing the scenes behind the story. -Jay Kinney, Your fellow Viking. 2/29/2008

For the digital story, Brandie and I worked on it together. Being the goofballs that we are we decided that it needed to be a two part adventure. I did part one she did part 2. We found roaylty free photos on bigfoto.com of places around the world and from there we took pictures in front of a green screen. I photoshoped us into to the pictures. (I didn't take a lot of time on this so they are not perfect.) We decided to use Powerpoint because the students are going to use it for their All About Books we have been working on in writing.
Here is one stop on our journey. :)

Just_Right_Books.wmv This is a movie that I did with a first grade teacher so that I could train her how to use Photo Story. Maybe I misunderstood the assignment. My movie is a little short. I thought it was supposed to be in story format. I took one of my children's favorite stories and adapted it to some of the pictures we took at my son's Black History Program. I hope you enjoy.
I enjoyed working with the students, but it was a little cumbersome to facilitate sorting the pictures and scripts. The audio doesn't come through very well. Tips, anyone?
To Lolly: I loved the Viking Buck video. Maybe we should use it at Freshman Orientation.

I'm not thrilled with the quality of the audio -- it may have something to do with recording it using Audacity and then importing it into PhotoStory. At any rate, I enjoyed creating this digital story about my playwriting class. The images and written text helped me reflect on the work my co-teacher and I do with this class (and celebrate our many successes).

My February project centers on a six-weeks service-learning my students complete titled "The Power of One." As part of this project, students must write a persuasive letter to a government official or someone in a capacity to address their community need. This PowerPoint focuses on the elements of effective persuasive writing. My plan is to upload this to my Novus site to add additional support for students as they work on their persuasive writing pieces at home. It will also help with students who were absent for the class lecture. I'd never recorded narration on PowerPoint before and found it extremely easy. Nearly all of my mini-lessons are delivered via PowerPoint, but now that I know how simple it is to add narration, I'm planning on doing that for all major mini-lessons and then uploading them to Novus. Again, this will help with students who were absent on the day of the lecture and for parents as well.

The students who made the following PhotoStories asked me to narrate for them in the final draft. I provided pictures for the students to use or they could find their own pictures on the internet. I allowed them to use text exerpts directly from their Science textbooks or websites- I didn't stress about plaigarism because I wanted to get the foundation for PhotoStory first. They did great!!!!

February was much faster, probably because my students did all the hard work. I have such wonderful students...they are so capable witih technology, that many times, they are teaching me. In case you're wondering why an English teacher was doing projects on water conservation, it is because of small learning communities. I am in the Math/Science community, largely because all but two (soon to be three) of the AP teachers are here, and we are required to do a cross-curricular project each quarter. Most often, they get the information in their other classes and I simply help them to get it down on paper. Hope you enjoy the show, Amanda worked hard on it.
